Keith Haring

Keith Haring

Keith Haring was an American artist and activist, one of the most recognizable and influential figures in contemporary art in the second half of the 20th century. Born in Pennsylvania in 1958, he trained artistically in New York, where he came into direct contact with the underground scene and the cultural ferment of the 1980s.

His work took shape in public spaces: Haring began drawing with chalk on empty advertising panels in the New York subway, making art immediately accessible and part of everyday life. This practice gave rise to a direct and codified visual language based on stylized figures, clear lines, and primary colors, designed to be readable by anyone.
His work spans drawing, painting, sculpture, murals, and graphics, maintaining a strong formal consistency. His symbols, moving figures, animals, children, and lines of energy become a universal alphabet, used to address social, political, and civil issues such as identity, power, violence, sexuality, and the spread of HIV/AIDS.

In 1986, he founded the Pop Shop in New York, a commercial space conceived as an extension of his artistic work, with the aim of overcoming the distinction between high art and popular culture. At the same time, he carried out public interventions and collaborated with institutions, schools, and social organizations.

Keith Haring died in 1990 at the age of 31. His work continues to be exhibited in major international museums. His work spans drawing, painting, sculpture, murals, and graphics, maintaining a strong formal consistency.
