UGO NESPOLO
Ugo Nespolo is one of the most versatile and recognizable artists in contemporary art. Born in Mosso, Piedmont, in 1941, he trained in Turin, where he attended the Accademia Albertina and graduated in Modern Literature with a thesis on semiology, which would have a structural influence on his visual research.
From the outset, Nespolo developed an autonomous and experimental language, in dialogue with the Italian and international neo-avant-garde. He was active in the Arte Povera movement, while maintaining an independent position, and established relationships with central figures in the artistic and intellectual culture of the time.
His practice spans painting, sculpture, photography, experimental cinema, design, graphics, and set design. Color, irony, and conceptual construction coexist in a production that rejects the rigid distinction between major arts and applied arts. His works are characterized by a strong playful component and a conscious use of quotation, seriality, and symbolic language.
Alongside his artistic activity, Nespolo makes art films, directs editorial projects, and collaborates with companies, theaters, and cultural institutions, helping to redefine the role of the artist as an active figure in society and contemporary visual communication.
