In Misplaced (2017), Angelo Accardi mixes realism and pop imagery to create a scene of clear displacement. In front of a large hospital building, an ostrich stands in the landscape while a small yellow Minion, often used by the artist as an ironic alter ego, looks at the surroundings with a suspended, uncertain gaze.
Gestural marks, quick flowers, and splashes of paint break the calm of the composition, giving the scene a more intimate and psychological feeling. The airplane circled in red, like a quick note, adds a sense of movement and the idea of searching for somewhere else.
The result is an image with a softly surreal tone, where every element seems “out of place,” and for this reason is able to evoke personal and universal emotions at the same time.
