In Maurizio’s Crime, Angelo Accardi stages a direct dialogue with the visual language of Maurizio Cattelan. At the center, the iconic golden toilet appears framed like a painting within the painting, an object turned into a museum relic and, simultaneously, a target for subtle irony.
To the left, Accardi includes Duchamp’s Fountain, presented as a modernist relic, while the banana on the green sofa unmistakably recalls Comedian, Cattelan’s provocative gesture questioning value, spectacle, and authorship. The elegantly dressed man seated on the sofa embodies the ambiguous role of the art system itself: observer, accomplice, and possible author of the “crime.”
Beside him stands one of Accardi’s signature animal figures, adding a layer of surreal vigilance to the scene. Geometric patterns, checkered flooring, and hand-drawn interventions complete the composition, creating a space suspended between installation, citation, and cultural critique.
Maurizio’s Crime is a sharp, ironic reflection on the chain of appropriations, provocations, and visual short circuits that define contemporary art, especially in relation to Cattelan’s legacy.
